Motion Detectors

Passive infrared sensors, or otherwise known simply as motion detectors are used in both residential and industrial security systems. I am sure that you may have noticed the clever little devices installed all around your workplace or home. They are usually installed in the top corner of a room or office or warehouse in a position that allows the sensor to “patrol” the maximum spatial area in that room or vicinity. Passive motion detectors perform a necessary task in securing your office or home. Once armed the passive motion sensor will detect if there is any movement in the space that is being patrolled by the device.

Passive infrared motion detectors are available with a wide variety of built in options to meet your personal security needs. They are generally supplied white in color but are usually manufactured from a plastic material called and could be painted a different color if so desired, keep in mind that if you were to paint the device you would need to take special care to not paint over the actual sensing portion of the device as this will cause it to perform below its expected requirement. The device itself can be supplied in two forms namely, Wired or Wireless.

The wired version of these devices will require the installer to run a physical wire from the control unit to the Motion detectors individually, which if not carried out neatly will not look attractive and will be obvious to the naked eye. Be sure that if possible your installer attempts to run the required cabling in the ceiling up to the point of presence of the sensor and then simply drills a small hole in the ceiling itself to allow the cable to be connected to the control unit. In rooms or areas where it is not possible to access the ceiling one could make use of a wireless passive infrared motion detector. As the name implies this type of detector makes use of its own radio-wave transmitter to establish a connection with the control unit. If you were to choose this option be sure to ask your installer about the expected battery life of the sensor and make the necessary battery changes before the sensor fails to work.
